POLK TOWNSHIP
What once was informally known as the Egypt Bridge was officially renamed the Polk Township Veterans Memorial Bridge, with the dedication ceremony taking place Saturday morning.
The Polk Township Veterans Memorial Bridge carries Egypt Road over the North Fork Creek on the outskirts of Brookville.
Once upon a time, a wooden bridge connected residents on either side of the creek, said Polk Township supervisor Neal Davis. In 1948, a truck carrying a large shovel, weighing about 60,000 pounds, planned to cross it on the way to a nearby coal limit. The old wooden bridge's weight limit was about 16,000 pounds.
