A Punxsutawney woman who was injured in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident was flown to an area trauma center on Monday morning.

According to the Punxsutawney Borough Police, Barb Sherry, Punxsutawney, was crossing in the crosswalk from the south to the north side in front of 407 East Mahoning St. at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday when a vehicle traveling eastbound on East Mahoning Street stopped to let her cross.

Police said there was a Ford Escape traveling west on East Mahoning Street that was driven by Andrew Smith, Harrisburg, who looked down for a moment and didn't see her.

The driver who stopped to let her cross blew his horn to signal Smith to alert him that she was in the crosswalk.

According to police, when Smith looked up, Sherry was in front of him, and he locked up his brakes.

Police said Sherry tried to hurry and get to the sidewalk but fell and that Smith's tire was on her ankle, causing her to fall facedown onto the sidewalk.

According to police, her injuries were to her face and ankle.

The officer said the first report was that she was a fall patient and that nothing was reported about a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident until the medic unit arrived at the scene.

Sherry was transported to Punxsutawney Area Hospital by Jefferson County EMS.

Police said Sherry was flown by emergency medical helicopter to an area trauma center for treatment of her injuries.

Smith was visiting relatives from out of town and was just leaving to return to Harrisburg.
