PUNXSUTAWNEY — Firefighters from five area companies responded to a working structure fire that occurred at noontime on Wednesday at 323 Pine St., Punxsutawney. The companies were dispatched at 12:03 p.m. to the fire, which completely destroyed the home.
Elk Run Fire Chief Doug McAfoos, who was in command at the fire, said that when they pulled in, the house was fully involved, with flames coming out of the windows. He said there was no one inside when firefighters arrived on-scene, as the two people who were inside had evacuated, along with five of the six dogs that they owned. The third person who lived there was not at home when the fire broke out.
McAfoos said that the renters who lived in the house said there had been some electrical problems in the house, and the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal was being called in to investigate.
More details are available in Thursday's print edition of The Spirit.

With Thanksgiving officially in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start thinking about Christmas, and this Saturday, one of the hallmark signs of the holiday season will be “coming to town,” as the streets will be filled with the 27th annual Home for the Holidays Parade, which is sponsored by the F.O. Eagles No. 1231 and will begin at 6 p.m. This year, the Punxsutawney Area High School Art Club will be collecting letters to Santa during the parade. If children bring their letters in an envelope addressed to Santa at the North Pole, with their return address, the PAHS Art Club students will make sure that they are sent off to the North Pole. The club is partnering with the post office to make sure that the letters are delivered to Santa in time and get a returned letter from the North Pole. Pictured here are some of the members of the club working on their float to prepare. (Photo courtesy of Jessica Green)
